Kaitlyn Dever

From a sitcom kid to the most trusted dramatic actress of her generation — and now the most argued-about character in prestige television.

Summary

Kaitlyn Dever is an American actress and musician whose career is one of the longest apprenticeships in young Hollywood — and one of the most complete. She spent a decade as a working child and teenage television actor (Justified, Last Man Standing) before two 2019 projects split her career in half: the comedy Booksmart, where she co-led as Amy, and the Netflix miniseries Unbelievable, where she played Marie Adler and earned her first Golden Globe nomination. Dopesick (2021) then brought her a second Golden Globe nomination and her first Emmy nomination. In 2025 she took on two of the year's most talked-about roles in the same year: Belle Gibson in Netflix's Apple Cider Vinegar and Abby Anderson in HBO's The Last of Us season 2 — the latter earning her a second Emmy nomination and setting up a third season built around her character. Outside acting she records music with her younger sister Mady in the duo Devers.

Early life and education

Dever was born in Phoenix, Arizona, to Tim and Kathy Dever, both former figure-skating instructors; her father also briefly worked as a voice actor, including a short stint voicing Barney the Dinosaur. The family moved to Dallas, Texas, where she took acting classes at the Dallas Young Actors Studio and filmed commercials, before settling in Los Angeles to pursue acting full time. Music was part of the household from the start: her mother played Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill on long car trips, and her father taught Kaitlyn and her sisters to harmonize — the beginning of the singing career she still maintains alongside acting.

Career

Her television career began with Loretta McCready in FX's Justified (2011–2015) and Eve Baxter in the sitcom Last Man Standing (2011–2021), where she grew from recurring player to series regular. Film work followed — Short Term 12 (2013), Detroit (2017), Beautiful Boy (2018) — before 2019 made her a critical name. Since then she has moved between film leads (Rosaline, No One Will Save You, Ticket to Paradise), prestige limited series and, from 2025, franchise television. Personal life

Dever keeps her private life largely out of the press. What is public is family and music: she is the eldest of three sisters, records with Mady, and has spoken about her parents' support for both careers. StarFile reports only what reputable outlets have already published and does not speculate about relationships or private matters.
